Improving the methods to quantify flood risk reduction and co-benefits of NbS in the Netherlands: An Innovation Lab

In this video, we summarize the highlights of the Innovation Lab that the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam conducted as part of the NATURANCE project. The project aims to explore opportunities for (re)insurers to (partially) fund NbS-measures that reduce natural catastrophe risk. The objective of the Innovation Lab was to co-create methods, together with key stakeholders, to quantify the reduction of flood risk and evaluate the co-benefits provided by Nature-based Solutions (NbS) in the Netherlands. The lab is structured in three sessions: the first session was the set-up of the lab, the second session aimed to identify effective methods to assess NbS risk-reduction benefits and the last session focused on the co-benefits of NbS. In the last session, we also gathered input from local policymakers to develop realistic NbS-strategies for the Limburg region.
